Eating Disorders: Epidemic and Life Threatening
According to the National Institue of Health "10% of eating disorder sufferers die."
During the past 25 years the incidence of eating disorders has increased substantially. Although these life-threatening problems have reached epidemic proportions
in this country, the development and availability of effective specialized treatment have not kept pace. It was to help meet this growing need that The Center for the Treatment of Eating
Disorders was established in 1983.
Do you know the Signs of An Eating Disorder? Take the Eating Disorders Questionnaire.
The Center was established in 1983.
During the late 70s and throughout the 80s, both the incidence and
prevalence of eating disorders
increased substantially. Statistics indicate that these potentially life-threatening
problems have reached epidemic proportions in this country. The development
and availability of effective specialized treatment, however, have not kept pace.
It was to help meet this growing need that The Center for the Treatment of Eating
Disorders was established in 1983.
Center Philosophy
The Center was founded on the knowledge that eating disorders are
generally a manifestation of psychological and interpersonal problems. Treatment, to be
effective, must therefore be multi-faceted and address not just the symptoms, but the
underlying problems.
Treatment Approach The approach to treatment offered at the Center was developed and refined
during years of private practice and hospital experience in the care of people with eating disorders and their
families, in conjunction with a critical examination of current treatment approaches and their efficacy. It is
embodied in a comprehensive state-of-the-art program designed to address all the factors essential to the
successful treatment of eating disorders.
