School Prevention Program
Established 1987, this program initially consisted of a recovered person providing a presentation
for students. The program has been expanded over the years to include presentations for parents
and training workshops for school personnel. In 1994 we produced an educational video,
EATING DISORDERS:
MYTHS VS. REALITIES, for the
prevention, identification and intervention of eating disorders, which has become a fundamental
part of the school prevention program. This is a psychoeducational program for the prevention, identification and
intervention of eating disorders. The video and companion manual examine the cognitive, emotional,
behavioral and social aspects of eating disorders. Using a cooperative learning format, the program
leads an audience through a description of eating disorders, contrasts the myths upon which they are
based with the realities, and helps students develop alternative adaptive coping skills.
Presentation for Students:
Our presentation for students involves a person in recovery providing information to students about the
seriousness of eating disorders and how they can identify one in themselves or friends. Students are shown a
video with young people examining and challenging the societal and media messages which facilitate the
development of eating disorders followed by a discussion on why people develop eating disorders, how they
are dysfunctional, and healthy alternative ways to cope. What students should do if they suspect that a
friend or fellow student has an eating disorder is described.
Presentation for Parents:
This presentation provides parents with the information they need to determine if one of their children is
demonstrating signs of an eating disorder and how to open up a discussion about eating disorders with them.
What parents can do and say to help their child with an eating disorder will be described. When and why
treatment may be necessary, what types of treatment are available, and the role parents can play in the
treatment process will also be discussed.
Inservice Training For School Personnel:
Our training workshop has been especially designed for: Guidance Counselors, Student
Assistance Counselors, School Nurses, Teachers, Coaches, and Child Study Team Members.
It provides all the information and training needed for school personnel to identify Eating
Disorders, confront students who have these problems, and address the issues with the students' parents.
Our goal is to help school personnel:
 |
Learn to identify and assess eating disorders in students, using questionnaires and screening tools.
|
 |
Learn a psychoeducational model for teaching the Coping Skills needed to prevent and treat eating disorders.
|
 |
Obtain the information needed to implement an eating disorders prevention and intervention
program in a school setting.
|
Adolescent Treatment Services:
At the Center, we offer a variety of treatment modalities to provide adolescents with the individualized assistance that can
address their special needs as they struggle to overcome their food-related difficulties. Please see our
Adolescent Treatment Services page for more information.
