An educational video for the prevention, identification, and intervention of eating disorders. Produced by

Therapeutic Education Inc.

A psychoeducational program for the prevention, identification, and intervention of eating disorders. An Educational Video and companion manual that examines the cognitive, emotional, behavioral and social aspects of eating disorders. The film addresses the issues that underly anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating-disorder and provides constructive alternatives to eating-disordered behavior. The manual provides the information and format needed to explore these issues in greater depth.

A Psychotherapeutic Experience which will:

    Lead an audience through a description of eating disorders.
    Contrast the myths upon which they are based with the realities.
    Present alternative adaptive solutions to these problems.

A Cooperative Learning Format will be used to address the question, "If eating disorders don't work, what does?", and to teach:

    Conflict Resolution Strategies
    Decision-Making Skills
    Stress Manaagement Techniques
    Communication and Assertion Skills

Companion Manual   The companion manual consists of nine sections corresponding to the nine myths/realities. Alternative way to implement the coorperative eductional plans are also described. The following handouts are included:

    Eating Disorders: Myths vs. Realities;
    Identifying Characterisitcs of Eating Disorders;
    Medical Consequences of Eating Disorders;
    When Someone You Know Has an Eating Disorder; and
    Eating Disorders Questionnaire.

    II. Educate adolescents and young adults about what eating disorders are, their seriousness, and how they develop.

    III. Facilitate early identification/intervention by:

      A. Challenging socio-cultural myths that foster the development of eating disorders

      B. Demonstrating that eating disorders don't work

      C. Offering constructive alternatives to eating-disordered behavior

      D. Providing a body-positive message

    V. Offer a non-theatening forum for exploring the myths underlying eating disorders.

Outline of Video

    1. The video begins with a montage of non-eating disordered adolescents making statements representative of the socio-cultural beliefs which foster the development of eating disorders.

    2. Young adults in recovery from anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder then dispel the nine myths about eating disorders in terms of their personal stories. This creates the story line which provides continuity to the video.

    3. Nine segments follow, each depicting one of the nine myths and the true realities.

    4. The video concludes with a review of each of the myths and a reiteration of the realities. Two professionals, working with a small group of students, develop alternative ways to deal with each situation.
